Our client’s brief:
Paul Hodgkiss Designs was honoured to be selected as the designer and maker of the podium, medal trays, and athlete gifts for the Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games.
Building on a reputation for designing and crafting prestigious awards and trophies -including commissions for the Nordoff-Robbins Scottish Music Awards, Women of Influence Awards, Healthy Working Lives, and the Balvenie Artisan Awards - we were entrusted with the design and manufacture of over 1,500 Glasgow elm quaichs presented to athletes and dignitaries throughout the Games.
The Games podiums were handcrafted over an eight-month period using locally sourced Glasgow elm and sycamore, salvaged from fallen trees with the support of Glasgow City Council. Each piece of timber was individually selected for its unique character, ensuring every podium was one of a kind. Elm was used for the gold podiums, while sycamore represented the silver and bronze, celebrating the natural beauty and heritage of Glasgow's urban woodland.
